Community & Education Work

As well as producing, Dan has nearly ten years experience in co-ordinating and delivering community and education work.


First working with Theatre Royal Plymouth as a trainee practitioner, over the past ten years Dan has co-ordinated, delivered and assisted on education and outreach projects for a number of companies - details of his previous work are listed on this page.




Capable of delivering one-off or durational workshops or residencies, Dan has experience of working with groups with all ages and abilities - leading sessions as diverse as developing basic drama skills to facilitating sessions on producing and devising new work. He has also worked with students in Higher Education, delivering lectures around various aspects related to his own practice, and has evaluated projects and created education packs for touring productions.




Through his work with EmptyBox Theatre, Dan has also been involved in the creation of work aimed at young people and family audiences both in terms of performances and workshop programmes. As someone with a passion for youth arts and theatre for young people, Dan has taken part in skills development workshops led by companies including Frantic Assembly, ATC and Half Moon Young People's Theatre; additionally, he has attended Masterclass events focused on creating work with young people led by Matthew Bourne, Richard Eyre and Ken Campbell.

01/11 – 04/11
Almeida Theatre – Residency Facilitator
Age of participants: 14-16

  • Delivered weekly workshops across a school term, centred around the current in-house production and themes contained within;
  • Devised workshop plans alongside other leaders and assistants, both for individual residencies and for programmes as a whole;
  • Monitored feedback and gathered evaluation materials from participants;
  • Led the residency group in delivering a performance on-stage in response to the themes of the residency

    EmptyBox Theatre – Producer
    Age of participants: 7-11

  • Involved in the devising and dramaturgical development of all work by the company, providing input to aid the development of projects at all stages aimed at school and family audiences;
  • Devised and delivered workshops based around productions, to be delivered post-show or independently;
  • Identified ways in which young people could be engaged with the ideas and materials used, and explored ways in which performances and workshops could tie in with the primary curriculum;
  • Alongside other company members, led workshops with school groups exploring puppetry and shadow play

    Old Vic Theatre – Workshop Leader, Barclays Capital: Staging Success Programme
    Age of participants: 13-20

  • Created workshop plans focusing on introducing school groups to producing in an engaging way, tying the content in with in-house productions;
  • Delivered workshops to school & college groups visiting The Old Vic, for ages ranging from 13+;
  • Worked alongside other workshop leaders and assistants to support participating groups in delivering a presentation to their peers, drawing on the knowledge gained during the day;
  • Provided evaluations of each workshop to the Education Projects Manager

    The Bush Theatre – Project Manager, First Time Voters
    Age of participants: 18+

  • Managed a performance event on behalf of The Bush Theatre, supporting writers, directors and actors in the creation, rehearsal and performance of newly created scripts in response to workshops with young first time voters;
  • Liaised with school and community groups involved in the project, facilitating the transition from workshops to final performances;
  • Recruited young performers to take part where necessary;
  • Delivered a comprehensive evaluation of the event for future reference

    Greenwich + Docklands Festivals – Producer
    Age of participants: 18+

  • Delivered lecture for undergraduate students at University of Winchester focused on developing work of a street arts nature;
  • Identified emerging street arts companies for potential future comissioning and programming in festivals

    PiP Promoters, Plymouth – Project Manager (Producing)
    Age of participants: 11+

  • Led workshop sessions with KS3 and above groups in local schools, helping them in developing their skills as producers/promoters and supporting them in the delivery of their own live events;
  • Led the co-ordination of live events, selecting appropriate acts/performers and negotiating terms with artists and venues;
  • Chaired and facilitated meetings and events for members of the group, and devised and delivered workshops for satellite groups

    Theatre Royal Plymouth – Youth & Community Theatre Practitioner
    Age of participants: 3-11

  • Delivered regular theatre skills classes for young people of varying ages;
  • Worked with professional practitioners and directors to create and manage workshop sessions, each with specific short-term and long-term outcomes;
  • Participated in workshops and events organised by Theatre Royal Plymouth, developing skills and knowledge related to working with young people and hard-to-reach communities

    Theatre Royal Winchester – Theatre & Education Administrator
    Age of participants: 8+

  • Co-ordinated the programming and delivery of all education events – both on-site and through satellite groups – including working with partners and funders to identify new areas of work;
  • Led holiday workshops focusing on page-to-stage work, and delivered regular workshops in the absence of regular leaders;
  • Worked alongside other in-house staff to deliver technical and behind-the-scenes workshops for visiting school groups;
  • Supported visiting companies in the programming and co-ordination of workshops for schools and young people

  • Assisted in the running of regular theatre skills/dance classes and schools workshops with young people of varying ages;
